Really, more snow!!

Thursday, April 29, 2010 | | 5 comments
A winter weather warning hey?  Hmm... Just when I was starting to get all excited about an early Spring this year.  I really do set myself up.    It is NEVER EVER early!!  See!!!

So as I am listening to the wind howl and posting the pictures I took just a few days ago, while out in my yard bare foot, I will not have my spirits dampened.  I will post my beautiful pictures anyways because in a few days we will be back to being green. And although you might want to hurt me for saying this, but I actually did have a small surge of " I love this cozy kind of stay in the house with a blanket and candles on, kind of weather"  But enough of that.  Spring, bring it on!

I have tulips popping up (we'll see if they survive this storm):

My daffodils are out:

But while I am waiting for beauty outside to co-operate, I am creating my own Spring indoors.  My little seedlings that I planted a few weeks ago are growing furiously!

My tomatoes are out to a great start, and it's amazing how quickly they will become large plants (so remember what they look like when they are small, because they grow up so fast!)

And I am trying to have my little herbs grow in my window again.  Last year we had a cat that kept digging in them, and they never grew.  This year we have a two year old, so we'll wait and see.  But at least I can see sprouts this year!!

And as an extra, I grew wheatgrass to fill my window with Spring while I wait for the outdoors to catch up to my enthusiasm.

Yes, green is a wonderful sight,
so whether or not it snows again, and again, and again,
I will enjoy my indoor gardens!

Jewelry Box Makeover

Monday, April 26, 2010 | | 54 comments

So I was out thrifting once again... and always wanted a jewelry box with compartments so I could have my "jewels" all nicely organized and separated.  As of now, they are all tossed in one box and I end up shaking them to hopefully allow the one I want to fall out of the crowd.  So I came upon this box for $5.99 and thought "Okay, this has different compartments.  I'll get it!"  Hmm, not enough compartments though.  But once again my daughter was going to a friends birthday party (3 weekends in a row -it's no wonder I thrift shop!) and decided to do up this little box for her friend.

Here is what it looked like when I bought it.  And $5.99 is pricey for this mess of a thing, but it has cute form!  And potential!!!

I primed it.

I thought a nice sunny yellow colour would look great and fun for a young girl.  The spray paint I used is actually called sunny yellow.  It also had a wind up music player in the back missing the turn knob, so I had one I saved from my daughters broken toy with the song from Sleeping Beauty: "Once Upon a Dream"  I love that song... "I know you I walked with you once upon a dream..."  Are you singing along with me?

Okay, here is what the lovely lady looks like now:

Whoo hoo, look at that leg!

She has inner beauty as well!  What a fun blue!

Cute handles too!

Well, I think she turned out pretty.  And summery!!  She was almost too cute to give away.  Are you a fan of yellow?  What a way to brighten up a room!

Enjoy!

Blue Bird Box

Monday, April 19, 2010 | | 19 comments
So I got this box at the thrift store, and I knew it was a good one.  So I bought it for $3.99.  I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it, but boxes are always easy to find something to do with, it makes cute storage for any item.  Okay, so my sister in law just had a baby.  Yeah!  So I decided I would use this box to make a gift for her little guy.

Ooops, I guess I deleted the before shot, but it looked like this but gray-ish and chipped:

After painting the box an heirloom white, I started with the inside.

I got a book from the recycle depot and started tearing out the pages (yikes... don't hate me.  I am recycling it!!)

Then I used mod podge to glue the torn pages into the inside of the box.

Looks good so far!  Then I picked up this little bird from the dollar store.

I was wanting him for myself (because he is so cute), but I placed him on the box, and he just had to stay.  I painted him blue.  Who doesn't think a little blue bird is cute!

I painted the top of the box blue, and added scrapbook paper into the glass frames, along withsome personal touches - my nephew's name is Beau.  So cute!  And here is the end result:

I love how it turned out!  Now I just have to find my nephew a cute little outfit to go inside.  I hope you enjoyed!!

A Thrift Store Quick Fix

Thursday, April 15, 2010 | | 9 comments
So again, thrift store hunting (now it may seem like I go a lot, but in fact I just go occasionally and buy a few things each time) and I came across this.  I knew right away what I wanted to do with it.  Give it a chic finish and eventually put some geraniums in it (when I find some for a good price).

Here is the before:

I added some gold craft paint that I had on hand, then added black once the gold was dry.  While adding the black I had a wet rag that I would wipe certain areas with to allow the gold to show through.  I was happy with the result.  I also had some semi-gloss varnish that I applied, but wasn't too happy about using it.  I had to put it on with a brush which wiped more of the black off, and let even more gold show through.  Some unexpected added bubbles to the finish (oh well),  next time I will just use a spray varnish.

But it all worked out in the end.

It looks great on my fireplace mantle in my bedroom.

Notice the colour of the wall in the background.  That's a sneak peek of my husbands and my effort this weekend towards our bedroom makeover.  More to come later.  We have lots to do to it still.

A peaceful resting spot.  Thanks to my thrift store for providing a new feature in my house, and for $2.49!

Thrift Store Find

Monday, April 12, 2010 | | 10 comments
I popped by the thrift store in town hoping to find a few big pieces of furniture that I can use in my bedroom that I am redoing.  No luck, I couldn't find anything worthy.  But just peeking around I did find this gem!  And for $2.99!

I darted over and put it in my cart.  What a lovely find!  Well I just thought it was so pretty, and the perfect size for truffles!

So I had a friend coming over for dinner the next day, and guess what I made?

Truffles!

They were delicious!!  Yum.

See, doesn't it look much better with truffles in it!  It will look even better once I find that silver polish I am looking for.

I'm linking up with Southern Hospitality for their thrift store finds party.  Check it out, they have lots of fun treasures!
